The Mission Trip from Redland Baptist Church Recap

It has been a very exciting couple of weeks here in St. Kitts. We welcomed the team from Redland Baptist Church in Wetumpka, Alabama on Thursday June 28th and their week of ministry was filled with awesome highs and one major unfortunate low.

They flew in without any problems and cleared customs with ease… which was a huge praise to the Lord considering the large amount of things they brought for us and another missionary family in St. Kitts (the Graysons). They quickly settled into their house which happened to be two doors down and across the street from us!

The Team at Their House

The weekend was filled with an island tour, visiting Port Zante, an afternoon at Cockelshell Beach and a delicious breakfast buffet.

Saturday evening they helped out at an Awana the Graysons and Joneses run.

On Sunday morning we all attended Salem Gospel Hall in St. Peters where Jeremy Shaw (one of the team members and pastors at Redland) preached the main sermon! Another team member (Diane Cox) was able to teach the Sunday School lesson!

On Monday morning we began teaching our 5 Day Clubs for the week. The team broke up into groups and taught three different clubs at Beach Allen Primary School (it was the last week of classes for these students). In the evening everyone taught together at the Salem Gospel Hall VBS/5 Day Club. On the first day of ministry we were able to reach over 300 kids!

Teaching 5 Day Clubs in St. Kitts

Unfortunately, our enemy was not going down without a fight. Early Tuesday morning, around 2am, the team was robbed while they slept peacefully in their beds. Everyone slept through the robbery except for one lady who woke up when she heard the door open to the house. She was thankfully asleep by the time the robbers entered her room. They stole the team’s cash, cell phones, cameras and other electronic devices. And before leaving they ate their pizza, took all of their Sprites and a box of cereal.

The ladies woke up around 5:30am to the realization of what took place as they slept. Thankfully, none of them were harmed and all of their passports were left untouched. Physically, everything was fine but emotionally everyone was understandably shaken up. It is believed the robbers were part of the landscaping crew that was at the house Monday afternoon doing yard work. Unfortunately the police have not been able to find the men as of yet.

But God is good and the robbery did not take Him by surprise. He allowed it to happen for reasons we may never know. He is also our provider because Sean and Jeremy told the management at the Marriott about what happened and they gave the team a very large and luxurious suite for an extremely discounted rate. For the remainder of their trip the team was able to sleep with peace of mind and in comfort physically and emotionally.

The entire incident is a testimony to the the spiritual oppression in St. Kitts. In this “Christian” culture, children are targets of satan. Sixth graders are already in gangs, families are broken and physical abuse is a big problem here. Most of the kids know Bible stories but are clueless when it comes to the Gospel. The team wasn’t about to let what happened stop them from reaching these kids.

Despite what happened the team seemed to pick up and keep going. By the end of the week over 314 children heard the Gospel and 19 kids are now our brothers and sisters in Christ! Their work here was a tremendous blessing to us and to this country. The Lord used them in powerful ways that many children here (and adults too) will not forget.

Teaching at Beach Allen Primary School

Our family was very sad to see them go. In fact, Maddy kept telling us at the airport that she wanted to go back to Alabama too. 🙁

On Saturday we spent the day at the Marriott swimming in their amazing pool… a little “family time” after the team left. As we were walking back to our car we passed a bunch of kids dressed up in caps and gowns for graduation. It “just so happened” that the students of Beach Allen Primary School were having their graduation ceremony at the Marriott that evening and they all recognized Sean! They asked if he was coming to their graduation and he said he would go home, get changed and come back.

Of course, he was little late so he stayed in the back. But the principal noticed him and brought him up to the front (with everyone watching) and sat him in the second row! All the kids got to see him there and they even had a small presentation about CEF and the clubs that took place there that week! After the graduation was over, the boy who originally asked if Sean was coming, came up to him and thanked him for being there.

God is sovereign!

Other Interesting Things

We were able to watch a fireworks show in St. Kitts on the 4th of July! There was an earthquake on the same day too. It only lasted seven seconds and was so small that Sean and I didn’t even know it happened until we were told about it!

Last night a field somewhat near our neighborhood caught on fire and is still burning a little today. It’s very dry here right now so I’m sure it doesn’t take much to set an entire field ablaze. With the way the sun was hitting the smoke behind the mountain it looked like fire was coming from the volcano and we joked about the “dormant” volcano waking up. Let’s hope that doesn’t actually happen!

This Week

Tomorrow our intern for the summer, Nathan, is flying in. He will have a few days to adjust and then next week he and Sean will be traveling to and from Nevis everyday teaching a 5 Day Club by themselves. In fact, we have several 5 Day Clubs planned for the three of us while he is here!

We are so thankful for your prayers and support. We are certainly trusting the Lord more this week than we ever have before.

We Have a National Office!!!

Last week we welcomed our bosses, also known as our Assistant Regional Directors for the Caribbean (Myron and Nita Tschetter) to St. Kitts and Nevis!

A Visit from The Tschetters

They were here to conduct a National Board training Thursday through Saturday for current board members and a few prospective members. The training was a great success and was just what the ministry needed here to continue moving full force ahead!

The ending of the training culminated in the dedication ceremony for our new national office Saturday evening! A good number of people attended to celebrate with us and to pray for God’s continued blessing on the ministry in St. Kitts and Nevis.

We even had a “cutting of the ribbon” event!

It was a good day for CEF of St. Kitts and Nevis! We now have a place for Sean to work (and he doesn’t have to share a room with Maddy when she naps) and a place for people to come for training, literature, meetings or simply to get information. This office can even host visitors from other countries because it has a full kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

This week we will be moving everything office related from our house to the new office. By Monday, Sean is planning to be working there completely!

Coming Up

On Saturday we will say goodbye to Sean’s family. 🙁 We have really enjoyed having them here for the last few weeks and will be sad to see them go. Hopefully they will enjoy their last week here. The rest of the time we are preparing for the mission trip team from Redland Baptist Church in Wetumpka, Alabama… they will be here NEXT WEEK! I can’t believe we are about to host our first mission team!

No Shortage of Things to Do

The last two weeks have been jam-packed with ministry, activities, summer heat and island inconveniences.

Sean’s Family Arrived

Two weeks ago Sean’s mother, two of his brothers and his sister arrived in St. Kitts! Micah could only stay for two weeks and left last Saturday but the rest of the family will be here until the end of June! I think they have enjoyed their stay so far. They have been to two of the best beaches we have (South Friars Beach and Cockelshell Beach), snorkeled, took a professional tour of the island, climbed the volcano, went on the zip lines, shopped at Port Zante and watched monkeys play in our yard!

They also had a taste of “real” life in St. Kitts when our internet was out for almost two weeks and the power went four times… and for six hours the first time! They seem to be handling it all very well though!

Children’s Sundays

For two Sundays in a row Sean had the privilege of being the guest speaker at a church. The first Sunday he spoke at Cayon Church of God and last Sunday he spoke at the Gingerland Weslyan Holiness Church in Nevis! Both of these churches were having their annual “Children’s Sunday Service” were the children lead worship, prayer, announcements… everything in the service except preach (that’s what Sean did). In the States, Sean very rarely preached at a church but it seems here, he is almost treated as a pastor! We are thankful for any opportunity to share about CEF and preaching is a great way to get people interested in more about what we do. Plus, Sean is pretty good at it! 😉

More Good News Clubs!

Another GNC began recently in Nevis! This brings the total to seven clubs so far this year! Sean and Micah took the ferry over and participated in one of the first club meetings. This club is very different from any clubs we had in both St. Kitts and in Montgomery… most of the kids know nothing about the Bible, Jesus or Christianity in general. St. Kitts and Nevis are considered predominantly Christian. The problem we usually run into here is that a lot of people know so much about the Bible but they don’t actually know God. So, it was a surprise to see kids in Nevis not know about Zacchaeus or even who Jesus is! What an opportunity we have to truly reach unreached children! They may not have known much before but they now have Good News Club every week!

Good News Club in Nevis

A girl attending Good News Club and the club location

Our club in Fig Tree seems to be getting better and better. We are really getting to know the kids more (even though we still have a little trouble understanding everything they say) and they are trusting us more because we are there week after week. They understand that we are going to be there with them for a long time. As leaders, Sean, myself and two local volunteers,we are much more organized and are teaching more like a team. The club in Fig Tree is one of the highlights of our week and we always look forward to Monday nights!

We Got an Office!!!!

Last week we found out supporters in the States donated a large sum of money specifically for St. Kitts and we knew exactly how to use some of it! The ministry here was in desperate need of an office where people can come to find information, have meetings, buy literature, hold trainings and even host our board meetings. Sean has been working at a tiny desk in our bedroom that he has to share with Maddy when she naps. I’m sure you can imagine the challenges with that arrangement. The office is actually going to be in the apartment that Margaret Smith lived in (the missionary from Guyana who was here for all of 2011) and provides two bedrooms to house visitors and ample office space! Plus, most people already associated it with CEF anyways!

The office will be officially dedicated this week with an opening ceremony of sorts and Sean will be working there next week!

Power Bill Drama

We finally received our first power bill and were told we needed to pay for three months worth of bills plus an $800 EC deposit… to be paid the very next day after we got the bill. Which just so happened to be the same time our rent was due. Basically, there was no “looking at our budget”… we just don’t have that kind of money laying around! After much prayer, Sean went to our real estate agency that manages our property and asked if we could work something out. Thankfully, they were completely understanding and are letting us stagger their rent so we can pay the power company! The power company here is a “pseudo-private” monopoly and according to locals is inefficient and corrupt. So we weren’t exactly surprised they billed us that way. Even going up to the office to pay our bill and deposit was crazy… Sean was there for almost three hours!

We are glad it all worked out and hopefully now that we have the power in our name and all the paper work done, we won’t be billed like that again. And yet… it wouldn’t surprise us if we do.

A VERY Busy Week

This week we will be having a training for the national board members in St. Kitts and Nevis. Our assistant director for the Caribbean region (aka Sean’s boss) and his wife will be here for three days to train the board and meet with us. The training will end on Saturday with the dedication of our new office!

We are continuing to prepare for the Redland Baptist Church mission team… they will be here in just two and a half weeks! We have secured their housing and scheduled their 5 Day Clubs! Their morning 5 Day Club will be held at the Beach Island Primary School (school goes until mid-July here) and Sean had to bring 500 permission slips to the school last week! It looks like they will be teaching a very large club!

We are definitely looking forward to not only a busy week but a very busy summer ahead of us!

A Week of Preparations

This week and last week have been very slow for us ministry wise. The National Board meeting was cancelled and rescheduled for this week and other than our Good News Club at Fig Tree, not much has happened.

Not that we are complaining. It’s been nice to relax a little before summer comes. Two mission teams have already purchased their tickets, a third is in the planning stages, an intern will be helping us for six weeks and Sean’s family is staying for a month… we know things will be crazy.

Not only will the summer be busy with mission teams doing 5 Day Clubs, but Sean is already getting calls for us to do them by ourselves. I think we will be very thankful to have an intern helping! That would give us three workers (Sean, myself and Nathan our summer intern) to teach the 5 Day Clubs when the mission teams aren’t here.

So, this week Sean is continuing to prepare for the mission teams, scheduling our summer and preparing for a Board training next month. I am busy getting our house ready for Saturday. Sean’s mother, two of his brothers and his sister fly in to visit us for the next month! Maddy is SO EXCITED to see her “Mimi”, “Unkee Micah”, “Unkee Wuke” and “Aunt Heder”. 🙂 Sean and I are excited to see our family and have visitors!

Other than a trip to Nevis tomorrow to deliver curriculum and a (hopeful) board meeting tomorrow evening, not much is happening. Hopefully we will be able to enjoy a calm week before things take off. Next week is already shaping up to be busy.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support!

Monkeys in our Yard

A Week of Ministry, Date Night, Bible Study and Holding Monkeys

We were a little worried about how we would adjust back to “normal” life in St. Kitts after our brief trip to Florida. We have been back for a little more than a week but it feels as if we never left! We basically came back and picked up right where we left off… Sean even says it felt like he was home. Obviously this is our home, but living here hasn’t always felt like “home” if you know what I mean. But I think it’s safe to say all three of us have adjusted nicely.

Fig Tree Good News Club

Last Monday Sean had to teach the entire club by himself but this Monday we were able to be more organized. The two locals we are teaching with not only came this Monday but did most of the teaching! It was the first time we had seen them in action and they were superb! They had energy, excitement and almost flawless lessons! It gives us GREAT confidence to see teachers here do such a wonderful job because it’s a glimpse at what could happen all over the island!

Preparing for Mission Teams

We have two confirmed teams coming this summer, one from Alabama and the other from Seattle! We have started the process to find the right housing for both teams… it’s so fun to look at different places on the island. Sometimes it feels like we are on House Hunters International! We are so excited these teams are coming. We have a lot of ministry planned for them including 5 Day Clubs and some service projects. Mission teams don’t typically come to St. Kitts and Nevis so their work here will make a huge impact.

Bible Studies

Outside of CEF ministry, Sean and I both started back in our Bible studies last week. (They were on break for a few weeks while the new semesters at Ross and the Medical School began). Sean is attending a mens study on Tuesday evenings as they learn about David. The ladies study is on Sunday nights and for the summer semester I will be leading it! We are doing 12 Extraordinary Women by John McArthur and I will be hosting the study at our house every other week. I haven’t led a Bible study in years so I’m nervous and excited all at the same time!

Mother’s Day

We had a fun and low-key Mother’s Day on Sunday. Sean and Maddy had a handmade card waiting for me when I woke up with lots of hugs and kisses and “You’re the best mom in the whole world” sayings from Maddy! In the afternoon the Graysons came over so the girls could play together. Maddy really missed Audri while we were gone! The best part of the day? I got to take a nap… which is probably the best present ever. 😉

Date Night

Sean and I realized we hadn’t been on a date since Valentine’s Day! Going on dates in St. Kitts is a lot more difficult because there really isn’t much to do and dinner is expensive even at the “normal” restaurants. However, the movie theater here is the nicest place on the island! And it’s really cheap too! We decided to go on Tuesday night, which is half price night, and got our tickets, two fountain cokes (haven’t seen fountain drinks ANYWHERE here), an extra large popcorn, a bag of Skittles and a bag of M&M’s for about $24 U.S. dollars! The theater was super clean and I even had to put a sweater on because it was so cold! Even the bathrooms were nice… they had automatic flush toilets and automatic hand dryers! For two hours we literally forgot we were in St. Kitts… it felt just like America! A trip to the movies will be our regular date night from now on!

More Repairs

We made pizza one night this week and heard strange noises coming from the oven while the pizza baked. Luckily we got to it in time, but the oven was trying to catch on fire! The wires were fried and a repairman came to fix it. Apparently, the wires somehow started touching each other and… well… boom. Unfortunately, something is wrong with the gas so now we have to wait for someone else to fix that problem before the repairman can fix the oven.

Coming Up

Sean has been working like crazy to finalize mission team plans, catch up on work from when we were gone, start on summer ministry and get ready for the National Board meeting. Next weekend (the 26th) Sean’s family will be coming to stay with us for a few weeks! We have already scheduled two speaking events at churches for June and then the team from Alabama will be here soon after! It feels like the summer is about to take off and it will be September before we know it!

And just for fun… we went to the port last week to buy gifts for my mother and Maddy found a guy with pet monkeys trying to make a few bucks. She insisted on holding the monkeys for nearly an hour. So we tracked the guy down but of course, when he put the monkeys on her she started screaming. So guess who ended up holding them instead?

Holding Monkeys in St. Kitts

So glad they had diapers on!

That about sums up our week! Thank you so much for your prayers and support!

Also, we got word this week that a dear friend and supporter from Montgomery had a heart attack and passed away today. We are very torn up about this and sad that we cannot be there during this time. Please keep this family (the Kemps) in your prayers. Thank you.
